The flywheel that built a 1,000-case firm
How faster cases, higher values, and better client relationships compound into firm growth, and what happens to the firms that don't move.
From 12 employees to 40, without burning out the team
A few years ago, Zirkin & Schmerling Law had about 12 employees and a few hundred active cases. Today we have 40 employees and well over 1,000 active cases. We did not grow by adding a proportional headcount. We grew by removing the bottleneck.
The biggest issue for our office in terms of growth was how to deal with all the medical records. As we kept growing, we had more records coming in because we had more cases. It was always an issue: how fast could we read the records, understand the value drivers, and write the demand? It was slowing down everything.
When LawPro.ai removed that friction, something unexpected happened. Cases moved faster. Values went up because nothing was being missed. Clients were happier because their paralegals had time to actually talk to them. Happier clients referred more cases. More cases meant more revenue to invest in marketing. More marketing brought in more cases. That is the flywheel.
Speed and quality are not a trade-off
The concern I hear most often from skeptical firm owners is that speed will come at the expense of quality. Move faster, miss things. The data tells a different story.
"Using technology, you increase speed and you increase quality. Humans get tired. Humans miss things. The technology does not get burned out or distracted. And now we can have so much more communication with clients because we are not buried in records."
Let me give you a concrete example. We had a client injured in a bus accident with only one hospital visit. It looked like a minimal case. We almost did not take it, but we did as a favor to a longstanding client. We have a rule: everything goes through LawPro.ai before a demand goes out.
The platform flagged a few words buried in the records. My client had injured her vocal cords in the accident. Her throat had hit the seat in front of her, and she had been having trouble with her voice ever since. We confirmed it with her, tracked it to the injury, treated it, and documented it. What looked like a $3,000 to $7,000 case is now in litigation as a six-figure matter, because she has a permanent vocal cord injury that would never have surfaced otherwise.
What happens to firms that don't move
I am direct about what the alternative looks like. If you refuse to adopt, that firm will not be in business. Your settlements will take too long. Clients will not be happy with you. Your average case value will be less, because there is just stuff that humans miss.
And the comparison compounds. If a firm next door is using AI, their clients are getting more touchpoints, faster resolutions, and higher case values. Word gets around. The firm that is not using technology loses clients not because of a mistake, but because of the gap in experience.
The best way to get business, and the least expensive way, is through referrals. If a client goes to a firm using technology, they are able to interact whenever they want, as often as they want, and they are going to go back to that firm every day of the week.
PE is coming, and firms need to be ready
A lot of law firms are ignoring this, or thinking it will not happen, or thinking it will stop. I think basically law firm owners just do not want to see it happen, because they are worried about what it means for their business. But private equity is entering the personal injury space, and it is bringing unlimited marketing budgets. This is real. It is not going away.
My answer: the firms that will survive PE pressure are the ones with real infrastructure. Efficient processes, strong client relationships, AI-powered workflows, and data that demonstrates a repeatable business model. Those firms either compete effectively or become attractive acquisition targets. Either outcome is better than being caught flat-footed.
We are in the first inning
I want law firm owners to understand something: as impressive as the current capabilities of AI are, they represent the beginning of the transformation, not the height of it.
We are nowhere close to the top right now. We are in the first inning of a nine-inning game. What we are going to be able to do in another year or two will be another new height. Five years from now, law firms will completely change and transform how they do business. The firms that start now build the habits, the integrations, and the institutional knowledge to take advantage of what is coming. The firms that wait keep falling further behind.
